Dr. Julia Hoffman (Hall Vs Helena) (*Spoilers*)

This post is not made to put down anyone’s take on the character, but is to enlighten those who may only see Tim Burton’s version as one-sided.

Grayson Hall, as many of you may already know, originated the character of Dr. Julia Hoffman for the original Dark Shadows series. I did some research and liked what I saw about the character. She is staunch, manipulative, a liar, bad ass, take no shit, does what she wants, strong, independent women.

What she did was amazing, but Julia did have her vices, as most humans do and that was how Tim Burton’s version took the character and gave her that plot. Helena’s version may come off as weak, drunk, bitchy and one-dimensional, but not to this person, oh no, there was more to her then meets the eye and I will share how exactly I saw her. I still saw the bad ass, not afraid to say anything attitude that Hall made famous for the character back in the original series. Why else would she call her own boss a bitch, confront Elizabeth about Barnabas’ true identity, and then come up with her own plan to become immortal by taking Barnabas’ blood? And as I recall, when she confronted Barnabas in the series, she talked to him about immortality, so there ya go. There is the simple link to one character to the other.

And despite the rumor of Julia’s death being sadly confirmed, I will say, the film picks up after that and really speeds up so you don’t exactly miss her too much. And then, as you believe the film to be over, we are shown a Julia Hoffman corpse at the bottom of the sea, and witness her eyes open and is still alive.

So I can only hope that we are either given a sequel of sorts from the man who swore he would never do another one after Batman Returns, or we are left to imagine what the future holds… and write never ending fanfics.
